Omg. So glad you talk about the mania that many people get on these drugs. When I brought up the mania with my spouse’s Dr she asked him a list of ludicrous criteria for mania. My spouse said no to the criteria (because no one would ever admit to that dumb shit) so the doctor told me he wasn’t manic and made me feel like a dummy for bringing it up.
You are not a dummy, you are educating yourself on the harm these drugs can do, you know more than the Dr, which is awful (but so the normal) because they should know the dangers of the drugs they prescribe. The mania I suffered with was then diagnosed as Bipolar- I went from feeling anxious from being in an abusive relationship to being given SSRI’s, the dosages increased, the mania, the other drugs given to counteract a Myriad of other side effects) It truly is awful what these drugs can do. Plus the suicidal tendencies- I fought the withdrawal battle for a long time and I no longer have a bipolar diagnosis! Each drug or increase of got me a new ‘label’ all subsequently gone!. I have so many Lables on my notes! It would be laughable if it wasn’t so despicable. I hope you are able to help your husband- print out all you have found and present to your doctor, you have to advocate for your husband as he doesn’t really know what is going on. It’s wonderful that you care so much. I’m new to Substack (as in how to use it) but I just looked and you can DM, so please feel free to. Kara x
Thanks! I’m not new to Substack but had no idea about the DMing. Will see if I can figure it out. Would love to be able to ask you more questions. I def thought my husband’s reaction to SSRIs indicated an underlying bipolar disorder but the Dr’s criteria were too silly for hubby to admit to them
If you look up Bipolar then the criteria won’t fit, mine didn’t, but I did have bouts of mania (looking back) mostly bought on by SSRI induced drinking (not always- but it played a big part), It was the drugs I couldn’t tolerate, I went on to a lovely peaceful life, two beautiful children & married, successful career - then 🙈years later I was put on SSRI’s again - I was hesitant, but I believed the Dr that it would be different- that’s a story for another day. Let’s try & get your husband well. X
